britspotting presents today: HUNGER
HUNGER
britspotting Warm-Up
On the eve of the festival (Thursday, November 12th) britspotting and Das Filmcafé will show you a screening of Steve McQueen’s HUNGER.
McQueen’s debut centers on the story of IRA activist Bobby Sands who is detained in the notorious Maze prison in Northern Ireland in 1981. Mainly, hate, violence and desperation dominates the prison. As he wants to win political status for the republican prisoners, he initiates a hunger strike. In the course of their protests, he and nine other inmates die during their seven month strike.
It is hard to believe that HUNGER is Steve McQueens debut feature film. It was voted Best Film of 2008 by Sight and Sound Magazine and various others, it won the much sought-after Caméra d’Or at the 61st Cannes Film Festival, the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Picture, the Sydney Film Prize, one BAFTA and 6 IFTA awards. Steve McQueen won the Turner prize in 1999 and his background in visual art clearly emphasises his powerful first film. Supported by an outstanding performance by leading actor Michael Fassbender, HUNGER is an immensely gripping piece of work which looks deeply into human abysms. Clearly, you should not miss out on one of the best British films of the last years!
HUNGER: November, 12 – 8:00 pm – Das Filmcafé
