On our closing night, britspotting will proudly present you Michael Winterbottoms new film GENOVA, starring Colin Firth, Catherine Keener and Hope Davis.

 

Set in the Italian port city of Genoa (italian: Genova), Michael Winterbottom’s new feature portrays the struggle of a family to overcome bereavement. In the aftermath of a car accident where their mother died, Joe (Colin Firth) takes his two daughters to Italy where they want to settle into a new life. On the picturesque streets of Genova, they individually start anew, each one of them with problems of their own: While Joe has to adjust to being a widower and single parent, his elder daughter Kelly dates a local teenager in secret. Moreover, his youngest daughter Mary, being ridden with guilt as she directly caused the tragic accident, starts to see the ghost of her mother…

 

After A MIGHTY HEART, 9 SONGS and THE ROAD TO GUANTÁNAMO, writer, producer and director Michael Winterbottom presents us another thoughtful, touching feature. GENOVA is a tender, heartbreaking drama with an optimistic end. A real gem and one of Winterbottom’s best films!
