britspotting presents: Anniversary Shorts

JOJO IN THE STARS
Our Best Short Films of the last 10 Years!
From today on, we will finally present you our short film series, which are really worth looking at. A special retrospect paves the way: our Anniversary Shorts of festival classics, award-winning animations, undiscovered and exceptional highlights!
JOJO IN THE STARS (britspotting 2005) by Marc Craste definitely belongs to the festival classics. The tragic story about love, self-sacrifice and jealousy is set in a nightmarish, but at the same time agonizingly beautiful world. The extraordinary 3D-animation won several awards: a BAFTA in 2004 and the Cartoon D’Or in 2005 amongst others.
The funny Irish short documentary USELESS DOG by Ken Wardrop (britspotting 2005) is a classic as well. Seeing the useless and slightly disturbed yard dog Guiness, Ken’s brother Trevor only ask wearily “What can you do?” – after all, he somehow belongs to the stock. Ken Wardrop’s films often deal with one subject: his family (see here). This year, he introduces us to another family member in his new short documentary THE HERD (will be shown in the Twisted series).
The subject of family also plays a role in Daniel O’Hara’s Irish short feature film FLUENT DYSPHASIA (britspotting 2005). Single father Murph (Stephen Rea) and his teenage daughter don’t have a lot to talk about until one day, Murph wakes up after a boozy night and can only speak one language: Irish. The film YU MING IS AINM DOM (MY NAME IS YU MING, britspotting 2004) also shows how lively Irish language can be. Like FLUENT DYSPHASIA, it won the Best Short Award at britspotting.
Another highlight of the film series shows how appealing a red “Don’t Press”-Button can be: the animated film ASTRONAUTS by Matt Walker (britspotting 2006), where pressing the button has fatal consequences for two bored spacemen. In his award-winning closing film Matt Walker developed his very own handwriting, which can also be recognised in LITTLE FACE which will be shown in the Twisted series.
