film selection

features

We aim to showcase a wide range of cutting edge British and Irish feature films, ranging from fiction films, documentaries to experimental features. We actively look for work that sits outside the mainstream, but
that doesn’t exclude us from showing plenty of “guilty pleasures”.

We champion original filmmakers such as Ken Loach, Shane Meadows, Churinda Chada and Lynne Ramsay and all the first time feature directors who choose to use britspotting to launch their films in Berlin.

Together with some retrospective programming and a whole host of discussions and special events, britspotting consistently proves itself with critics and audience alike.

short films

The art of short film making is to get the audience hooked in less than half an hour. Britspotting is bringing this art back to the big screen with an own section within the festival.

We show you the highlights of contemporary British and Irish short films from all genres.

Other than graduate thesis films britspotting presents audience favourites like the films of Daniel O’Hara (YU MING IS AINM DOM, britspotting 2004; FLUENT DYSPHASIA, britspotting 2005) or Daniel Mulloy (DAD, britspotting 2007; SON, britspotting 2008).

Our films include award and Oscar nominees and winners (WASP by Andrea Arnold, britspotting 2004).

The britspotting programmers are constantly looking for new material to choose the best out of hundrets for the festival.

experimentals

Since 2005 britspotting shows a special programme which is called experiments. This programme presents extraordinary and creative display formats of films.

We want to bring works to the big screen that roam freely between avantgarde, experimental film and video art.

During the years we screened lots of films of famous artists like The Brothers Quay, Matt Hulse, People Like Us, Semiconductor, Al+Al, Ben Rivers and George Barber. Additional to these big names we presented young talents like Joseph Barnett, whose film GUILTY BY NATURE got the LUX award in 2007 for the best experimental film at the London Halloween Short Film Festival.
