The Contemporary Unspeakable: Three Films by Vivienne Dick A selection of films by one of Ireland’s most influential experimental film makers, best described as the “No Wave filmmaker” by film critic J. Hoberman. We are delighted to welcome Vivienne Dick to the festival to present her films. Films: STATEN ISLAND (1978, 4 min.) Pat Place plays a creature who lives in an old abandoned barge on a rubbish strewn beach. The mood is post-apocalyptic and the music of Telstar mixed with domestic kitchen clatter. GUERILLERE TALKS (1978, 28 min.) Dick’s first film consists of eight unedited rolls of super-8 sound footage each of which is a sort of Warholian screen test for Dick’s female subjects. VISIBILITY MODERATE (1981, 45 min.) Coinciding with Dick’s return to Ireland from New York and perhaps her most self-reflective work; part travelogue, part vacation film parody, our tour guide is new wave scenester Margaret Ann Irinsky. A new DVD Release: BETWEEN TRUTH AND FICTION, THE FILMS OF VIVIENNE DICK will be available to buy during the festival and online: www.lux.org.uk. |
